Car, cash, tech and house competitions: what to know about each type

A dream-car draw and a £50 instant win work very differently. How the main types of UK competition compare, and what to check for each.

Competition sites tend to mix several formats on the same page. Each one has a photo, a progress bar and a price, but the odds, the value and the small print are often very different.

Dream car competitions

The headline draws: supercars, campervans and SUVs, often with tens of thousands of tickets. Check the car's exact specification, registration, mileage and history, whether delivery is included, whether a cash alternative is offered and how much it is. A "£60,000 car" with a £40,000 cash alternative tells you what the operator thinks it is really worth.

Cash competitions

The simplest prize to value, which makes them the easiest to compare with the calculator. Check whether the cash is paid by bank transfer in full, how quickly, and whether "tax-free cash" is just a marketing phrase (it is generally tax-free anyway, as our tax guide explains).

Tech competitions

Phones, consoles, laptops and TVs. Ticket numbers are smaller, so odds look better, but retail values can be generous. Check the exact model, storage and colour, and whether the prize is new and boxed with a UK warranty.

Instant wins

Tickets are matched against pre-set winning numbers the moment you buy. They feel exciting because the result is immediate, which is also why they deserve a firm budget. Check how many instant prizes there are, how many have already been won, and whether they are cash or site credit.

House draws

House and property draws use the same legal structure but at a much larger scale. Many have fallen short of their ticket targets in the past and paid out a cash prize instead of the house. Read the minimum-sales clause carefully and treat the advertised property as the best case, not a guarantee.

Holidays and experiences

Check dates, blackout periods, who can travel, what is included and what it costs to get there. A prize you cannot practically use has very little value to you.
